Curls | Taming That Frizz

It was around three years ago when I finally decided to stop damaging my hair...

It wasn't that I kept dying my hair; the cause was down to heat damage. Literally, daily frying! My hair had become really thin and just was not growing evenly anymore. So it had to stop! I finally took the plunge - I decided to stop using my straighteners and start embracing my naturally curly hair for good.

Three years on and a few lot of hair products later, I have finally found a brand that co-operates with my hair and has helped me get through the transition from heat-damaged tresses to naturally soft curls.

Shea Moisture products have helped me tame my naturally curly hair and the main reason for this is that they are sulfate free. But what are sulphates? Well, sulphates are a type of detergent commonly found in a range of household products, including soaps, toothpastes and face wash. When these types of sulphates are in your shampoo, they strip your hair of natural oils and leave it feeling dry and prone to frizz. If you are looking for a sulphate free shampoo, take a look at the list of ingredients on the product in question. Any mention of the words 'Sodium Laureth Sulfate', 'Sodium Lauryl Sulfate', or 'Ammonium Laureth Sulfate' and you might want to reconsider.

The Shea Moisture brand has a range of different products which suit a variety of hair types. I am currently using (and really liking) the Fruit Fusion & Coconut Water Weightless Shampoo and Conditioner, which is great for fine curls like mine! I have also tried some of the other types, including the Superfruit Complex, Coconut & Hibiscus, and the Jamaican Black Castor Oil. Each product has different benefits so it really is down to personal preference and what you need to help care for your hair.

After washing, to prep my hair for styling, I first apply the Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strengthen and Restore Leave-In Conditioner, which is really helping to grow those baby hairs I have by the nape of my neck (the ones which for some unknown reason struggle to grow at the same rate as the rest of my hair). This conditioner is also great at softening my curls and helping them keep their bounciness.

I then follow with the Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus Curl Smoothie to shape my curls and keep them in place. I have tried all sorts of gels, mousses and serums, but I have finally settled on the curl smoothie as it doesnt make my hair feel crispy or sticky like some other curly hair products do (sounds lovely doesn't it!). It has a thicker consistency than the leave-in conditioner, but easily slides through each strand. I am a fan of the scents of both of these styling products, but I know from some reviews that others have not enjoyed the smell quite as much! If you like sweet smelling products, I think you will like this. Either way, it doesnt last too long once it's on your hair!

shea moisture hold and shine

Normal, everyday hairsprays can also be drying to all hair types, so to set my hairstyle in place, I use the Coconut & Hibiscus Hold and Shine spray. This is a great product to smooth down any fly-aways and also add some shine to your curls. I try not to spritz too much on though as it can make fine hair look greasy if overused.

Overall, if you have curly hair and are looking for something that won't be harsh towards your curls, but also has the ability to keep your curls looking soft and bouncy whilst holding them in place, this might just be the solution! I'm sure I will keep trying new products as I like to change things up once in a while, but for now, this is the perfect brand for me!
